Poetry for Children
What do you think of poetry? Poetry is not some dusty old book sitting on the book shelf in the dark library corner. Poetry is so much more than that. Poetry has the longest history in the human art form; it existed before the written language. Much of famous history and literature started as oral literature. This oral tradition is the backbone of poetry - sound and meaning. Today, without us realizing, poetry is often the first form of literature introduced to children as nursery songs. Even the popular songs on the radio can be read as poems in extension. We might not recognize its presence in our lives, but poetry is all around us.
